Race Reports

Charlotte Thunder Road Marathon
Author Last Post
The ninth edition of this race was held on Saturday, 16 November 2013. The race began at 7:45 on South Tryon Street in the Uptown area, headed south and east before returning to the area of the half marathoners could finish their race. We then ran through the northeast side of town before returning to the finish on Martin Luther King Blvd. in Uptown. The course does a nice job of showing runners a lot of Charlotte, including some nice neighborhoods. The weatherman was really cooperative as the temperatures ranged from the high 40s at the start to the high 50s at the end. There was a slight wind which actually felt worse after the race, as it combined with sweaty clothes to make for chilled runners. The post-race party was pretty good with a good band, lots of food, free Michelob Ultra, and some space heaters which helped runners stay warm. The only downside is that Charlotte is a bit hillier than I prefer (but I have seen much worse hills). I clocked 4:20:08 and chipped 4:17:54. I have seen contradictory numbers of finishers (male, female, M55-59) but I apparently was around median overall and age group, worse than median for all males. But as long as I can get out there and finish (and drink a couple of brews after the race) I am happy.
